Sundae

See that long block thing coiled in this bowl? (sticking out of the plastic?)

That’s Sundae. A really long sausage, filled with noodles and beef blood. Better tasting than looking. But I can only handle about an inch or two of it, as it is very rich.

Also in the plastic but barely visible is beef liver. I’ve seen it in half a dozen different iterations at the market. I’ve never known if liver is good for you or bad for you, but I think that it’s a real staple for Korea’s poor.

Laver

Fresh seaweed, roasted and salted and packaged right in front of you.

Many of you have had nori seaweed wrapped around your sushi rolls. But Koreans oil their seaweed, and it is called laver. It’s melt-in-your-mouth yummy, the same way popcorn is. That little oil addition makes all the difference in the world…

So in the war of supremacy between Korea and Japan, when it comes to seaweed – Korea wins!

Dried Frogs & Peppers

The language exchange guy saw me photographing these, and he didn’t think they are part of traditional Korean cooking. He kept saying these odd things must be from China, or for Chinese.

Maybe he was just embarassed and didn’t want me to think they were Korean? I didn’t see any Chinese people shopping at the market. I wish I could speak to the adjumma and ask her what the heck they are used for.
